Drake has created a huge online buzz after releasing three albums at the same time – Iceman, Habibti and Maid of Honour.
The surprise release quickly went viral on streaming sites and social media, with fans reacting in mixed fashion to the massive undertaking.
Some listeners praised Drake for experimenting with different sounds, while others criticised the albums for being too long and repetitive.
Kenyan entertainment commentator Liebe Kiki defended Drake, saying that many people judged the music too quickly without giving the albums enough time.
“Drake has taken so many creative risks, and he’s still taking them, and he’s getting all this criticism online,” Kiki said.
Over the course of three albums, Drake fuses Afrobeat-inspired sounds, melodic R&B, emotional storytelling, club music, and traditional rap.
Several fans on X praised the diversity of the project.
“One thing about Drake, he always gives variety,” a fan wrote on X, @DailyRapTalk.
Another fan, @OVOUpdates, posted:
“People are hating now, but these albums will age well after a few months.”
But not everyone agreed.
“Three albums at once is too many. I think he could have taken the best songs and made one great album.” @HipHopCentral)
Another listener, @RapWorldDaily, slammed Drake for repeating topics on fame, relationships, and betrayal and not offering anything new to the table.
Despite the criticism, the albums continue to dominate streaming charts and online chatter around the world.
Drake has yet to respond to the backlash directly but in recent Livestream conversations with fans has suggested that they should spend more time with the music before judging it.
The project remains divisive online, but many fans agree that Drake still knows how to keep the music industry talking.
