Fire guts the main building of Makerere University

Fire broke at the main building [Ivory Tower] of Makerere University just after midnight burning the roof and top floors.

Reports from Uganda’s top university indicate that Police Fire Brigade is struggling to put out the fire that has covered almost half of the roof of the building.

The building houses several offices including the university’s main-hall, The printery and the Vice Chancellor’s office among others.

The fire ‘accident’ has occurred when the university was planning to resume studies next month after a long break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fire have been common in Uganda’s primary and secondary schools but not in universities. Critics point ‘lack of preparedness’ to meet covid-19 measures for studies to resume next month.
