Four university students arrested over robbery claims in the city

Police said they conducted a thorough search in the suspects single room that led to the recovery of an imitation of a pistol.

Two laptops suspected to have been stolen property were also found among other items.

Detectives are interrogating four university students believed to be part of a gang behind incidents of violent robberies in Ruai, Juja, Kayole in Nairobi and surrounding areas.

This is after an undercover team of police officers based at Makadara, Ruai, Embakasi and Kayole in a joint operation arrested a 19-year-old Kenyatta University student.

The arrest follows intelligence leads that he was part of a dangerous criminal gang.

Police say the suspect led the officers to his three accomplices who are fellow freshers, living at Kwa Benson apartments in Juja’s Container area.

During the operation, the students pursuing a degree course in Development Studies at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology were arrested.

Police said they conducted a thorough search in the suspects’ single room that led to the recovery of an imitation of a pistol.

“A glock pistol 8 used 9×19mm special cartridges, one empty pistol magazine, one white plastic face mask was found,” police said.

Two laptops suspected to have been stolen property were also found among other items.

Crime scene detectives based at DCI Thika processed the crime scene.

The suspects were then escorted to Juja police station pending further interrogation before arraignment.

Police say cases of robbery have been on the rise in the areas and the suspects are linked to the same.

It is not the first time university students are arrested over crime.

Detectives handling the matter said they are investigating to establish if there are more players in the crime syndicate.
