A girl who pleaded for financial help when she passed her exams during KCPE four years ago has attained a mean grade of A with 81 points.

Catherine Achieng, 18, had a desire to attend Pangani Girls high school when she passed her exams four years ago.

However, her parents Jacqueline Anyango and Vincent Odhiambo who were both tailors could not afford her school fees.

But the release of the KCSE examinations early in the week have brought a smile to the family.

“I feel very nice and excited with the outcome of the exams. When I joined Pangani, at first, my performance was not good but later in form two, things started changing,” Achieng’ told the Star during an interview on Wednesday.

Achieng who could not contain her excitement thanked the Pangani alumni for the support they gave her over the years.

“I appreciate their every effort both financially and emotionally. They were able to mentor me over the years . They even trained me on how to hack life stresses and how to ensure I read to pass my education,” she said.

She said she wants to pursue medicine at the University of Nairobi.

“In fact, if it were up to me,  I would love to go and study abroad. I will apply for scholarships to study abroad. If I am lucky, I will just thank God,” she said.

Her mother Jacqueline Anyango said she screamed when the results were released.

“I am so happy until my voice is cracking up.  In fact, I am even struggling to speak,” she said as her voice faded away.

After her story was highlighted, Achieng got help from Pangani alumni who sent her money for fees including monthly upkeep.

Education CS George Magoha said 2020 KCSE exam candidates performed better compared to those from the previous year.

While announcing the results, the CS said that all the 747,161 students who sat the exam will be absorbed in universities, colleges as well as TVET institutions.

Magoha said that 893 students scored As in the 2020 exam, compared to 627 recorded in 2019.

The CS also said that Turkana county had the highest number of overage candidates. Bungoma had the highest number of underage candidates.

Underage candidates are those aged 16 years and below. Those who scored C+ and above were just over 143,000.
