The Star—a daily newspaper published in Nairobi by the Radio Africa Group—has faced heavy backlash after publishing a misleading piece by Gloria Khafafa, the slay queen that used her beauty to scam Kenya Pipeline Company.
In the exaggerated guest blog suspectedly authorized by Gloria’s brother—Radio Africa Group Chief Operating Officer Martin Khafafa—she recounted being allegedly tracked, and harassed by members of the disbanded Special Service Unit (SSU) that served under the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Ms. Khafafa dramatically claimed that the dreaded killer squad was sent to force her to implicate President William Ruto in a court case where she was arrested and charged alongside ex-KPC MD Joe Sang, Vincent Cheruiyot and Billy Aseka.
“I was told later if ‘co-operated ‘ and become a ‘state witness ‘ all charges would have been dropped,” the blog post reads in part.
As it now emerges, her story that was carried by The Star was largely untruthful and narrow on the real details of why she was arrested.
Despite the company’s human resource department recommending her suspension over her qualifications on various occasions, she somehow managed to keep serving in the position until the DCI finally arrested her.
During Joe Sang’s tenure, Ms Khafafa Gloria was a common face in KPC scandals.
Not only did she hold academic papers, but her appointment as Company Secretary was also done illegally.
Thanks to her physical endowment, little-known Gloria Khafafa rose to be a company secretary at Kenya’s largest mover of fuel products.
She knew how to get the right people in her corner, including the then g KPC Board Chair John Ngumi – one of the most corrupt men in the country, and once wanted in Tanzania for fraud.
So powerful was Ms. Khafafa that a meeting meant to discuss her suitability for the post was called off at the last minute when the disciplinary committee had already assembled at Kenpipe Plaza.
KPC HR had recommended for suspension for lying about her CPS (K) qualification and being a Certified Public Secretary.
Two months later, she was shockingly part of a board meeting chaired by John Ngumi that was supposed to discuss her conduct.
In fact, she was the one taking the minutes.
“Members discussed the issue at length and resolved to confirm the appointment of Gloria Khafaja to the position of Chief Legal Officer,” minutes of that meeting held on September 15, 2015 read.
Until her arrest in 2019, she was a frequent traveller who loved to share her photos in different cities on her social media pages.
She later deleted them after questions were raised about how she got her position.
Years later, Ms Khafafa still misses the high-end life and is now desperately lobbying for a job in Ruto’s government by trying to whip up the President’s sympathy.
She now pretends to have been part of the struggle against state capture, when, in the actual sense, she was part of the cabal of greedy criminals.
How Gloria Khafafa gained employment at KPC with falsified documents
The Kenya Pipeline Company, in November 2009, placed an advert in media papers advertising the position of Senior Legal Officer and Legal Officer, one which was to close on the 23rd of November 2009.
The requirement for this position was to be a Certified Public Secretary (CPSK).
On the 11th of December 2009, Ms. Gloria Nasakami Khafafa (the then Ag. Company Secretary) applied for both Positions of Legal Officer 1 and Senior Legal Officer.
She worked in co-hoots with some directors to help her access employment. In her application letters, she indicated having CPS, which was a requirement for this job.
The requirements placed by KPC were that for the appointment as a senior legal officer, one was required to at least have a minimum of 7 years experience in a busy law firm.
But a certificate of admission to the bar of the High Court for this “learned lady” was dated 3rd June 2004.
She only had 5 years of experience and, therefore, was not qualified for the job.
She lied with a smile on her face.
Furthermore, she misled the board, stating in her application letters that she is pursuing CPS.
This lady has no morals; because a copy of the communication from KASNEB to KPC, the only institution that is mandated to conduct CPS exams in Kenya dated 11th March 2014, clearly states Gloria Robia Nasakami Khafafa registered for Certified Public Secretaries (CPS) on the 23rd of July 2013.
Basically, KPC employed a con artist to sit on the board to take minutes.
A letter From Registration of Certified Public Secretaries Board dated 6th of June 2014 Ref No. Staff/Khafafa/3636 denied clearly that Gloria Khafafa was not a member of the board.
On the 25th of February 2010, Ms Gloria Khafafa was employed as a senior legal officer at the detriment of other Kenyans, yet she was positioned 4th as per the interview panel.
Investigation into qualifications of Gloria Khafafa by the Human Resources Department
This part will make any Kenyan reconsider the integrity and qualities of leaders at in various state corporations.
KPC Directors, with full knowledge of Gloria Khafafa’s unscrupulous ways, promoted her and even went to the extent of suspending competent lawyers from duty just to uphold a cheat.
On the 14th of January 2013, KPC placed an internal advert for a Chief Legal Office.
On 24th January 2013, our “learned” lady, Ms. Gloria Robia Khafafa, applied for that position.
In her letter forwarded to HR, she claimed to be a holder of CPS (K) yet a letter from ICPS (K) dated 7th March 2014 does not recognize Gloria Robia Khafafa.
These were certified in the possession of KPC management and the Board.
Based on Gloria Khafafa’s lies, the management invited her for an interview of Chief Legal Officer.
This is when Ms Khafafa failed to produce her CPS certificates as required by company rules and regulations and the requirements of her position.
The Human Resources department instituted an investigation into the matter by writing to various certification bodies.
And as per their responses, and correspondences dated 6th March 2013, 10th March 2014 and 11th March 2014, it turned out that Gloria was a lie and a big one to both the Board and Management.
The Human Resources Department was concerned and instituted an investigation into the matter, led by the Security officer in charge of investigations, Wilkinson Ntwiga.
As per the investigation report, the following recommendations were made:
a) As in practice, staff Gloria Khafafa should be suspended with immediate effect in order to pave the way for investigation.
b) Considering that Gloria Khafafa held a key position in the Legal Department of the company, it would be important for a comprehensive audit to be carried out of all transactions she has conducted and if she is found to have prejudiced the company in any way then appropriate measures to be taken in order to safeguard the interests of KPC.
c) Security to report this case to the police since it was a criminal offence and the accused is by profession custodian of law, who is well-informed of the consequences of document falsification.
During a board meeting on 12th November 2014, Chief Manager Human Resources and Administration reported the case that Gloria Khafafa gave false information on employment and that disciplinary proceedings should begin.
In a memo dated 10th July 2014 Ref HR/CO/20, a senior officer was appointed to hear a disciplinary case against this learned friend at Kenya pipeline after investigations revealed she was a con woman and a liar.
She was supposed to appear before the committee on 11th July 2014.
A letter was written to Gloria for her to show a cause letter for why she gave false information and why disciplinary measures should not be undertaken against her.
As usual, Ms Khafafa continued with false information, as per her response dated 28th March 2014.
A Disciplinary meeting failed to take place due to the then MD Charles Tanui whose appetite for women was in everyone’s knowledge.
On the day he had authority over anyone and the close ties with Gloria were no secret, including their international trips.
Ms Khafafa travelled with Charles Tanui to Australia, Dubai and Europe in the year 2014-2015, as was seen in her deleted Facebook uploads.
Irrespective of falsification and giving misleading information to secure employment, on the 15th of September 2014, Charles Tanui the then MD (office boyfriend) appointed Ms Khafafa as acting chief legal officer despite having all reports on her.
Ms Khafafa was clearly favoured by top management and the board of directors.
She used this to her full advantage.
The Kenya Petroleum Oil Workers Union, through a letter dated 24th June raised an alarm on the application of double standards on matters relating to integrity in regard to the case relating to Gloria Khafafa.
In all other previous circumstances, all staff involved faced termination and others were taken to court.
