A 30-year-old COVID-19 patient today allegedly slit his own throat in an attempted suicide while in isolation at the Mbagathi Infectious Disease Unit in Nairobi.

The man had been admitted to the ward on Saturday at about 6 pm and was devastated when he was told he would be quarantined for 14 days.

The patient removed a florescent tube in his room, broke it, and used it to slit his throat, Police and medical personnel said.

Nurses heard him struggle and rushed to his rescue. Doctors say they are offering the patient counseling and that he is recuperating.

“We told him he is young and will recover. We informed him he was not the only one who is sick and that all shall be well,” said an official.
