Over seven people are feared dead after a lorry lost control ploughing into traders and ended up hitting a matatu in Kaburengu along the Webuye-Eldoret Highway on Monday, August 24.
The lorry was ferrying ballast from Webuye to Eldoret when it lost its breaks while approaching the Kaburengu interchange along the busy highway.
The driver of the lorry is among the seven people who are reported to have perished in the accident that occurred at around 2 p.m.
Those injured in the grisly road accident were rushed to medical facilities in the area including Webuye Sub County Hospital for emergency treatment while the bodies of the deceased were ferried to Webuye sub-county hospital mortuary.
The section of the road has been marked as a black spot with a number of accidents witnessed at the interchange over the years.
The interchange is the only access to Kakamega from the busy Webuye-Eldoret highway with numerous motorists complaining about the narrow road.
Most of the casualties from the accident were women who were selling fruits and vegetables on the roadside and had little time to flee from the lorry’s collision path.
A bodaboda rider was also part of the accident as the lorry hit him before ramming into the matatu that was stationary on the roadside.
