Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia has said that 151,494 teachers have been vaccinated as of May 9.
Speaking today during the release of exam results for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), said the number constitutes 48.9 per cent female teachers and 51 per cent male.
She said that the TSC is impressed with the high rate of Covid-19 vaccine uptake among teachers, majority being teachers aged 58 and above.
Macharia also called upon more instructors to take up the Covid-19 vaccine.
“Having concluded the examination period, I beseech all teachers to take up the jab. The President granted all teachers an opportunity to get the vaccination regardless of age. Let us utilize this gracious opportunity to protect our lives. It is sad to note that so far, we have lost 37 secondary school teachers; including 24 principals, three deputy principals and 10 classroom teachers,” she said.
She said the commission has provided full medical cover for Covid-19-related ailments as well as a medical insurance app through their health insurance provider MINET.
According to her, the WalimuCare app allows teachers to access tele-medicine access anytime and from anywhere including isolation centres and their homes.
“The app also ensures access to Covid-19 health tips. You can track your hospital visits, order for medication and manage your dependents,” she added.
However, she also announced that 37 teachers have died of Covid-19 complications.
Macharia said the 37 include 24 principals, three deputy principals and 10 classroom teachers.
“We don’t want to continue losing our teachers. Kindly take the Covid-19 vaccine in centres,” Macharia said.
On exams malpractice, she said some teachers would screenshot the exams before disseminating them to candidates.
“We are very disappointed by this report. A senior teacher took screenshots and it was recovered as the cellphone was being taken to a candidate in hospital,” she said.
Macharia advised teachers against abetting exam cheating, saying TSC doesn’t support any form of malpractices.
11 examination officials were arrested over attempts to expose KCSE examination papers.
Education CS George Magoha said the officials who include centre managers and supervisors were from Homa Bay, Mandera, Kisii, Garissa and Kisumu.
