Former Nyeri Senator Mutahi Kagwe is set to join the club of super-rich members of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet following his nomination to head the Health docket.
According to documents tabled in the Parliament last week, Mutahi Kagwe’s net wealth was estimated to be Sh667.8 million.
Kagwe defended himself that he owns two firms, His public relations firm, Tell-Em made Sh2.87 million profit while research agency TNS RMS East Africa generated Sh2.625 million last year.
“I am worth what I am worth as a result of my hard work. I started doing feasibility studies in my room at Hall 2 at the University of Nairobi and for over 40 years I must have made some money,” Mr Kagwe told the parliamentary committee chaired by Speaker Justin Muturi.
Last month, President Uhuru appointed Kagwe to replace the embattled Sicily Kariuki who was reshuffled to the Water and Sanitation ministry. Sicily Kariuki is said to be worth Sh210 million, she joined the Cabinet with a declared wealth level of Sh168 million.
A former director at Betting Control and Licensing Board Simon Chelugui declared that he’s worth Sh796 when he was appointed as Water and Sanitation Secretary in 2018 before being reshuffled to the Labour ministry.
