How Corrupt Police Officers Milk Illegal Somali Migrants

Investigations by DCI detectives have revealed that two Anti-Terrorism Police Unit officers were bribed with thousands of shillings to prevent the repatriation of four Somali nationals who were found to be in the country illegally.

The officers, Constable Noah Songony of ATPU Garissa and Constable Elkana Kemboi of ATPU Lamu, colluded with the Somali nationals and failed to deport them. The foreigners had entered the country through Uganda but were caught by the police.

After the court ordered their deportation, they were handed over to the three arresting officers. However, the foreigners were later found to have been released and were living freely in the country.

It has been established that police officers and some government officials are compromised by aliens to get into the country, while those ordered to be repatriated are released after parting with large sums of money.

On December 2, 2022, a former assistant chief from Tana River and a resident of Eastleigh were accused of helping foreigners acquire national identification cards after parting with large sums of money.

The former government official took two foreigners to Makadara Huduma Centre to apply for the national IDs and is said to be the kingpin of a cartel hosting several foreigners in Eastleigh.

At Pangani Police Station, a foreigner who was supposed to be deported was released under unclear circumstances. The court had ordered Hussein Muhmin Hassan to be deported after he was found to be in the country illegally.

However, the family of Hassan compromised with a corporal at the station and paid Sh1.5 million to buy his freedom. The culprit was released unconditionally, and the removal from custody was not recorded until it was booked by another constable.

Two officers claimed they took Hassan to the Industrial Area Police Depot but only collected a copy of the repatriation order on June 16, 2022, when they escorted another prisoner, Elamu Alambo, further complicating the issue.
