Shocking: How Sports Ministry spent Ksh. 1 billion on furnishing clinics while athletes are struggling with sponsorship

Details have emerged intimating that the Sports Ministry spent Ksh1 billion to facilitate the removal of the mobile clinics from the National Youth Service yard in Miritini.

Reports by a local daily indicated the money was used to move the containers from the yard, furnish and equip them to the required standards before they were distributed countrywide even as athletes struggle with sponsorship.

The National Assembly Committee on Sports was shocked to learn that the money was paid to the Ministry of Health to furnish the clinics.

The 99 containers which were bought at a cost of Ksh99 million were moved from the NYS yard in Miritini, where they have been since December 2015.

MPs were angered by the fund managers for ignoring pleas for funding by sports officials and instead chose to bail out the Health Ministry.

Legally, there is nothing wrong with the Ministry of Health getting a slice of cash from the Fund.

On Tuesday, the Football Federation of Kenya (FKF) announced the cancellation of the Harambee Starlets training due to lack of funds.

Officials of the national women’s football team have long decried the inadequate support that they have been receiving from the Ministry of Sports led by Ambassador Amina Mohamed.
