IEBC and Advertisement Bills get presidential assent

President Uhuru Kenyatta has assented the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (Amendment) Bill No. 3 of 2019 and the County Outdoor Advertising Control Bill of 2020 into law.

The amended IEBC law will create a selection panel to oversee the filling up of vacant positions left after three commissioners resigned in 2018.

The new law will also dictate how IEBC Commissioners will be picked and it also outlines the qualifications of members of the selection panel.

County Outdoor Advertising Control Act on the other side will rationalize outdoor advertising in the Counties by ensuring a balance between commercial, environmental and public safety considerations.

The Act is reacting to the ability of counties to rake in through outdoor advertising hence the need to provide a uniform licensing regime across the 47 Counties.

The two Bills were forwarded to President Kenyatta for signature at State House, Nairobi by Solicitor General Ken Ogeto in the presence of Speaker Senate Ken Lusaka and the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi.

The Head of Public Service Dr Joseph Kinyua, Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Amos Kimunya, Clerk of the National Assembly Michael Sialai, his Senate counterpart Jeremiah Nyegenye and the State House Deputy Chief of Staff Njee Muturi were also present.
