Vihiga governor Wilbur Ottichilo has cautioned the electorate from the area from depending on handouts from their political leaders and told them to instead ask for long term projects that will sustain their lives.

The governor is set to defend his seat in 2022 and has gone flat on the ground rebranding himself on development aspects and gender related matters. It is said Vihiga women have put pressure on Ottichilo to name a female running mate as the current deputy governor Patrick Saisi and his predecessor Caleb Amaswache, who served under the regime of Moses Akaranga, performed poorly.

Ottichilo while addressing Vihiga residents during the award of governor’s scholarship to needy but bright students from the county said the culture of residents depending on handouts from their leaders has promoted poverty among many families. Ottichilo said giving handouts to the electorate has also led to voters making wrong choices when electing their leaders where most of those elected are not development and service delivery oriented.

Ottichilo asked the electorate in the county to gauge him on the development and service delivery to them and not dishing out handouts. Ottichilo also reminded his opponents eyeing Vihiga gubernatorial seat in 2022 general elections that defeating him will not be a walk in the park. Ottichilo said he is ready to face his opponents in the 2022 contest asking them to prepare for a tough political battle.

“Some of my opponents have taken their campaigns in funerals where they say they will send me home early in the morning in 2022. I want to tell them that defeating me will not be a walk in the park.
