Barely weeks after it emerged that the budget estimates for the upcoming financial year by Treasury had slashed Rachel Ruto’s budget, the DP’s family appears to be now responding in kind.
For a while now, since the gradual fallout between the president and his deputy began unfolding, the so called deep state (the informal name given to a band of shadowy unseen characters wielding immeasurable power) has reportedly gone after the DP’s allies, harassing anyone connected to him. Following recent happenings however, it now appears that the war has been escalated to a different level, as the brazen group throws caution to the wind and goes direct into the DP’s house, touching none less than his own wife and second lady, Mrs. Rachel Ruto.
William Ruto himself has in the past complained about the targeting of people close to him by the system, saying that it has gotten to a point where some are even afraid to be seen with him because the next thing that will happen is government agencies such as EACC, KRA, DCI and DPP will begin pursuing them.
Office of the spouse of the DP has been allocated Sh235 million in Treasury’s budget estimates for the next financial year.
Rachel’s office was allocated Sh281 million in the budget for the year ending June 2020, the current allocation being Sh50 million less the ordinary appropriations. In what appears to be a targeted effort to clip the deputy’s wings, the DP’s wife now finds herself in the crossfire of the fierce ongoing battle, as her budget sees drastic reductions.
The fact that yesterday’s nuptials at Karen when the DP’s daughter was getting married didn’t involve the president or his wife points to a fallout that has now taken personal dimensions.
Ruto himself didn’t get through the budget allocations unscathed. DP Ruto’s initial hospitality allocation was pegged at about Sh174 million but the same has been retained at Sh23 million as was provided in the post-Covid-19 budget cuts.
The DP has been provided Sh96 million for local travel and Sh33 million for foreign trips – which was once ranging at about Sh89 million.
Treasury has also sustained cuts on the DP’s other operating expenses with the provision of Sh103 million, being half of what is normally provided.
Ruto office’s fuel budget is Sh14 million, down from the normal range of Sh28 million in the previous years.
