John Wambua, husband to the Likoni tragedy victims, the late Mariam Kighenda and Amanda Mutheu’s father has been compensated for his car that plunged into the Indian Ocean killing his loved ones.

Wambua filed a claim wth Mayfair Insurance while plans to retrieve the vehicles were still ongoing last week.

The claim for the comprehensively insured vehicle was registered on October 7th and it took a week to process it.

Funeral plans are still underway for Mariam and Amanda’s burial.

The Tragedy

Mariam Kighenda and 4-year old Amanda Mutheu lost their lives after their car slipped off a ferry at the Likoni crossing channel and plunged into the Indian Ocean on September 29th 2019.

It took the efforts of a maryiad of divers, both foreign and national, under the supervision of the Kenyan Navy to retrieve the bodies and the vehicle from the ocean floor.

The car with bodies inside was retrieved on 11th, October, 2019.

There were allegations of posturing and it is said that this led to the delays in completing the retrieval operations.

Investigations

The puzzle that the detectives are faced with is to establish whether the engine of the car was running when it slipped from the faulty prows of MV Harambee on the evening of September 29.

The ignition key of the station wagon was off but the windshield wipers were found to be on.

The gear, according to the Scene of Crime unit officers, was in the parking mode when the car was pulled out of the ocean at the Mbaraki Wharf.

The bodies of the lady and her daughter were taken to Jocham Hospital mortuary where an autopsy is being conducted.
