Blogger Abraham Mutai has claimed Rwanda President Paul Kagame planned to murder him two years ago.
“It’s critical to understand Paul Kagame is an Assasin feared by even (president) Museveni. Kagame wanted to assassinate me. He wanted to kill me in 2018-2019. Thanks to the Kenyan government, you can’t kill someone on their own soil. But the people of Rwanda, we will speak on your behalf”, Mutai wrote on his Twitter account.
Though the allegations are unsubstantiated, for those who know, Mutai ran a sensitization campaign on his social media platforms exposing human rights abuses, oppression and Poverty in Rwanda.
Paul Kagame is known for crushing dissent and opposition in the small country of Rwanda.
Kagame’s critics end up being killed, physically attacked, jailed, silenced, or forced into exile, as was mostly seen in the lead up to the 2017 presidential election.
Research by the Human rights Watch (HRW), suggests summary executions, enforced disappearances, unlawful arrest and detention, and torture remain all too common in Rwanda. At one point, Kagame accused those raising concerns about human rights violations of suffering from a “superiority complex.”
Free speech – or the freedom to criticize the government or the ruling party – has been severely repressed in Rwanda.
Mutai’s claims are not far from from the truth as Rwanda has been accused of assassinating opponents at home and abroad.
In 1998, Seth Sendashonga, a former Rwanda Cabinet Minister was shot dead in a United Nations (UN) vehicle along Forest Road in Nairobi.
Mr Sendashonga had demanded punishment for rogue soldiers carrying out revenge attacks against suspects in the 1994 genocide.
In South Africa, former Rwandan intelligence chief Patrick Karegeya was strangled at a New Year’s eve party in 2013 for ‘knowing too much’.
All these cases and others have not been solved to date.
