The three prisoners who had escaped Kenya’s top maximum security prison at Kamiti have said the wardens are planning to execute them.
According to the three escapees, the two wardens who helped scheme the escape from Kamiti prison were not among those charged.
One of the three terror convicts told the trial magistrate that he was scared of being sent back to Kamiti as the two wardens may make them pay for the failed mission.“
There are two wardens who helped us plan our escape from the Kamiti but who have not been charged,” Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga said.
Addressing Kahawa chief magistrate Diana Mochache, Akhulunga said he knew the two very well by name.
“I am ready to identify them if brought forward. Our lives would be in danger if we were to be taken back to Kamiti,” the outspoken inmate said.
Mochache asked him to give her the names in confidence and said she would forward them to the investigating team. The magistrate advised that Akhulunga records another statement at the Anti-Terror Police Unit for further action.
Akhulunga, however, did not stop there. He also told the court some of the tools they used to aid them in breaking out of prison were not presented in court.
The investigating officer had presented two razor blades, blankets, nails, a chisel, mattresses and a makeshift ladder as exhibits.
“I can’t see the pair of scissors we used to cut the blanket into strips that we eventually used as a rope. There is also one more blade and a hook missing. Two rims of photocopying papers are also missing. We used white photocopying papers to cover the hole on the wall. Since they are of the same colour as the cell walls, it would not be possible to notice the difference,” he said.
Also missing from the exhibit was a bar of soap,which the inmate explained they used to fill and cover the hole, before sticking the papers on top.
“The soap acted like glue. It hasn’t been presented either,” he said.
Akhulunga alias Zarkarawi, Mohammed Ali Abikar and Joseph Juma Odhiambo alias Yusuf on Monday confessed to the chief magistrate how they made their way out of Kamiti Maximum Security Prison on or about November 15.
All were charged with terrorism-related offences. A fourth cellmate was a person living with disability and could not make it.
After pleading guilty to charges of escaping from lawful custody, they were all sentenced to 15 months in prison, a term to be served after finishing their ongoing sentence.
Thirteen prison wardens, including Kamiti prison boss Charles Mutembei, were charged with aiding the escape of the three terrorists.
They were on Monday released on a cash bail of Sh200, 000, except for Mutembei whose bail was set at Sh300, 000. The prosecution did not oppose their release on bond.
