After the death of renowned comedian Charles Bukeko aka Papa Shirandula at the parking lot of Karen Hospital and the allegations that the hospital was negligent in attending to him, the Karen Hospital released a very distasteful statement defending itself.
However, it turns out there are many who can narrate the cases of negligence at the hospital.
Below is another case of negligence as narrated on Twitter
Last year, I lost my dad at Karen Hospital.
My dad was referred from Kisumu. He needed an urgent heart procedure (stent), on arrival they demanded a deposit of 600k which we paid for admission into ICU.
His condition wasn’t so bad he just needed oxygen so we had him ICU just as a precaution for close monitoring just in case his state deteriorates. We started weighing our options as whether to allow the procedure proceed at that facility or seek attention elsewhere.
Our other options were Nairobi Hospital, South Africa or India. On hearing that we were considering other options. Gikonyo snr, son Anthony and a surgeon called us into a meeting where they pitched and persuaded us to let them proceed with the procedure. The entire cost would be about 3 million. They demanded a deposit of 1.5 million which we arranged for.
Karen Hospital is a village hospital in a posh neighborhood.
After the payment they started giving us excuses. They took us in circles to a point of no return. Mara CathLab imeharibika (got spoilt), mara (another time) they are waiting for its spare from sijui wapi (I don’t know where) and they couldn’t commit on when the issue would be resolved.
We had committed our resources there and the patient’s condition was taking a turn. My dad couldn’t be transferred to any other hospital because his condition had worsened. Transferring him to another facility would have meant we raise deposits again plus the procedures cost. On realizing their mess they advised us to take him to another facility. In his state he couldn’t be airlifted. Karen Hospital is a village hospital in a posh neighborhood.
He died waiting for a procedure which we later learnt they can’t perform in their facility. All they wanted was our deposits. All they do there is escort patients to their graves after milking them dry
They also have a way of concealing cause of deaths to avoid lawsuits due to negligence. Once a patient passes on. They arrange for a funeral home to collect the body and hurriedly perform and embalming on the body without the consent of next of kin.
It’s a crime scene.
