For a second year, the African Energy Chamber has selected 25 people in the oil, gas, and power industries as part of their annual Movers and Shakers to Watch list.

I am grateful to the chamber for featuring me on this significant list alongside other distinguished individuals. Each leader featured on the list plays a key role in shaping Africa’s energy economy in the near future,” MD Miano stated

The top Managing Director at the Africa’s leading energy producer dedicated her victory to the entire team at KenGen. A very Noble gesture to be very honest.

The honour of being on the list, however, really belongs to team KenGen and its efforts to light up Africa one village at a time, sustainably. These efforts include six Clean Development Mechanism projects that have yielded USD 3.627 million so far, enabling a further implementation of green projects that contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions,” she said

The Tana and Kiambere hydro projects as well as the Olkaria geothermal projects have also helped offset some 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.

In particular, the addition of the Olkaria V Power Plant to the national grid alone has been responsible for the expansion of the country’s geothermal capacity by 25% to 856 megawatts, of which 706 megawatts are produced by KenGen. As noted in the 2019 annual report, geothermal energy is crucial for Kenya, as it accounts for 45% of all energy generation in the country.

It is followed by hydro, with KenGen responsible for producing 818 megawatts.

KenGen continues to enhance ecosystem sustainability, specifically through the distribution of 1.5 million tree seedlings to communities over the last five years.

The company has also implemented environmental management programs in all its areas of operation in order to protect the environment and minimize its carbon footprint.
KenGen further plans to diversify with a focus on non-energy-generation revenue sources, such as drilling, operations, maintenance services, training, and consulting to other nations.”

All of these initiatives form just part of KenGen’s overall agenda in making a lasting positive impact from one generation to the next generation.

They are buttressed by a series of social investments, including the Corporate Social Investment Program that focuses on the three strategic pillars of education, environment, and access to clean water. In what may just be KenGen’s biggest social endeavour, it is working together with the Nakuru government to co-finance the Naivasha Level 5 Hospital, which is located in a town that serves as Kenya’’s geothermal hub.

Currently under construction, the hospital is scheduled to be completed by June 2021 and should serve approximately 600 patients a day.

Projects like these as well as a dynamic and committed team make me especially proud to serve as CEO and Managing Director of KenGen. These are some of the reason why the company is indeed a Mover and Shaker to Watch
