Deputy President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance has promised to restore dignity in police service if they form government after the August polls.
The announcement was made by Dr. Ruto’s running mate Hon. Rigathi Gachagua who is on a campaign trail around Mt Kenya regions with other coalition leaders. He said that Kenya Kwanza government will ensure civil servants are supported with better salaries and promotions at work.
Hon. Gachagua was accompanied by Meru Senator Mithika Linturi who is running for governor and MPs Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), Mugambi Rindikiri (Buuri) and Charles Njagua (Starehe) among other leaders.
He emphasized that DP Ruto is committed to improve perks for the police and prison departments to serve Kenyans better.
“Since President Mwai Kibaki retired the salaries and allowances for police officers have not been improved. Once Dr Ruto takes over the salaries and allowances will be reviewed.” Gachagua said.
He also stated that officers with degrees will be remunerated according to their academic qualifications. Gachagua who has been camping at the Mt Kenya region to drum up support for Dr Ruto and Kenya Kwanza Alliance said the plan to improve working condition for the police, chiefs, and assistant county commissioners will aim at restoring dignity in the civil service.
Politicians allied to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance have over the time accused Interior CS Fred Matiangi of using police to mete violence against them and to frustrate their campaigns in the run up to August polls.
Kenya Kwanza leaders have been collecting views from police officers on how to improve their welfare once they take power. Improving working conditions in the sector is seen a key way to reform it and ensure efficiency, decline in crime and improved welfare of the officers.
Deputy president William Ruto during a public forum in Embu explained that Kenya Kwanza team was collecting views from the public on ways to improve their welfare.
DP Ruto has repeatedly called out the Interior CS of using police to fight political opponents instead of serving the people as Gachagua asked the police to approach any of them to volunteer their views.
“DP Ruto is unhappy with the frustrations and helplessness our officers are going through and he has tasked us to collect opinions from them on how they want it addressed,” Gachagua said.
Kenya Kwanza government will put up more housing units for the police officers to increase the housing capacity and the recruitment of new officers to reach the world standard of one police officer to 450 people.
