Kenyan marathoner succumbs to brain damage days after Austria race

The late Patric Cheruiyot

Kenyan long-distance runner Patrick Cheruiyot has passed away.

His management Volare Sports Management and family have confirmed the untimely demise which occurred in Nairobi over the weekend.

The youngster whose marathon career was just taking shape after notably competing in Nairobi’s Standard Chartered Marathon, Linz Marathon in Austria and Graz Marathon succumbed to brain damage.

While confirming the death in a statement, Volare Sports Management described Patrick Cheruiyot as a disciplined athlete whose future was bright.

Patrick was an upcoming athlete, training in Kapkitony, Kenya,” reads their statement.

Patrick became 5th at Standard Chartered Marathon in Nairobi in 2018. Last April he ran Linz Marathon in 2:18 and got injured during the race.

Last weekend he participated at Graz Marathon in Austria, but he had to drop out of the race at 3km point already.

He complained of headache and the medical aid services helped and examined him. Nothing serious was found and he was ready to travel home.

Upon arrival, he was admitted in Nairobi, because he still wasn’t feeling well. Treatment for malaria didn’t help him and on Wednesday 16th October a CT scan was made of his head.

A brain haemorrhage was seen and on Friday 18th October, he passed away.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife Winny, his two children, his family at large and the teammates and close friends from Kapkitony. We will miss Patrick as a member of our team,” Volare’s statement read.
