A nurse admitted at the Intensive Care Unit at Kisii Teaching Referral Hospital (KTRH) gave birth to a bouncing baby boy on Friday, July 24, despite being on oxygen support.
The nurse from Rachuonyo, Homa Bay County, is battling Coronavirus (Covid-19), a virus she contracted when she was 33 weeks pregnant.
Medics at the referral hospital stated that their colleague underwent a normal delivery despite signing consent to deliver through cesarean section due to her condition.
KTRH CEO Dr Enock Ondari detailed that the health workers who aided the nurse to give birth had to consider a number of options on the safest way to do so, while also protecting the mother and baby.
“Covid-19 is a new disease to all of us and we cannot ascertain its end. The baby and the mother are stable and we are constantly monitoring them,” Ondari stated in an interview with The Standard on Tuesday, July 27.
Another medic heaped praise on the new mother, stating how difficult it was to bear labour pain while on Oxygen support.
Her husband, who is in self-quarantine expressed his joy after receiving the news that he was a new father in the most unusual of circumstances.
“I went in with the doctors while dressed in personal protective equipment and I saw my baby in an incubator,” the husband recalled.
