Kisumu County has announced a major crackdown on criminal gangs, rogue businesses, and unruly matatu operators following a high-level security meeting co-chaired by the county governor and the county commissioner.
The new measures are aimed at restoring law and order amid growing concerns over organised crime, political violence, and insecurity within the public transport sector.
As part of the operation, the county government will begin vetting businesses across the county, with firms suspected of financing, harbouring, or facilitating criminal activities facing revocation of their business licences. Officials warned that business owners found collaborating with gangs will also face legal action.
Security agencies have also been directed to work closely with public transport SACCOs to identify and crack down on matatus linked to criminal activities, intimidation, and public disorder. Authorities said vehicles used to facilitate crime will be impounded, while those responsible will be arrested and prosecuted.
County leaders further declared that political goonism would not be tolerated, insisting that public gatherings and political events must be conducted within the law. They warned that criminal groups disguising themselves as private security teams would face decisive action.
The latest security measures follow recent protests during which suspected gangs allegedly infiltrated demonstrations, vandalised businesses, looted shops, attacked residents, and harassed peaceful protesters. The incidents left many traders counting losses and renewed concerns over organised criminal networks operating within the county.
To strengthen security, Kisumu County plans to expand its CCTV surveillance network across estates, business centres, and other strategic public areas. The additional cameras are expected to improve real-time monitoring and help law enforcement identify and track suspects more effectively.
The county also plans to establish village and neighbourhood security committees to enhance cooperation between residents and security agencies in addressing crime at the grassroots level.
In addition, an extensive street lighting rehabilitation programme will be rolled out across crime hotspots, informal settlements, and major transport corridors to improve visibility and deter criminal activity at night.
County officials say the combined measures are intended to improve public safety, protect businesses, and restore confidence in Kisumu's security environment.
