Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o has prevented Azimio supporters from protesting in Kisumu on Thursday.
Kisumu Central MP Dr Joshua Oron has however stepped in to lead the demonstrations.
“I was in Nairobi yesterday and Raila Odinga called me to come and lead today’s demonstration,” he told a charged crowd in Kondele.
The demonstrators had made it clear that they do no want Governor Nyong’o to be part of today’s demonstration.
“Let Governor Nyong’o keep off completely, we don’t have faith in him, he is hell bent to sabotage these demonstrations,” said a demonstrator who only gave one name as John.
This is after Governor Nyong’o on Wednesday suspended any forms of demonstratons in the lakeside city only to backtrack in the evening after criticism.
Nyong’o explained that demonstrations will continue after he was assured of enough security to deal with hooligans who have been blamed for the destruction of property and looting.
The demonstrators also declined to follow the Obunga route to city center insisting that they must follow the Jomo Kenyatta highway.
On Monday, demonstrators chastised Governor Nyong’o for leading the protests to Nyamsaria, on the outskirts of Kisumu.
MP Oron finally caved after numerous requests, and demonstrators are now marching towards town.
Nyong’o is missing, as are his deputy Mathews Owili and Speaker Elisha Oraro, who accompanied him on Monday.
