Kisumu residents and traders now want the county government to move with speed to arrest and revoke licenses for Matatu Saccos found defying Covid-19 protocols.

The operators claim that this will help reduce the number Covid-19 cases being recorded in the county.

Speaking to Ghetto Radio, Wickliffe Osoro a trader in Kisumu town stated that most matatu are defying Covid-19 protocols by carrying excess passengers who are also not wearing masks.

“I really appreciate the move by the government to put measures that would help us in reducing the number of Covid-19 Cases within Kisumu County. But according to me, the county should move very fast and arrest matatu saccos which are still carrying a number more than the required and they should ensure their licenses are revoked,” said Wickliffe.

“You find these matatus are still carrying more than the required capacity and some are not even masked, this still will increase the virus’ case load,” he added.

Otieno has further requested Matatu Saccos to ensure water points are available for hand washing.

“Before we used to have water points within town but now they are nowhere to be seen. Kindly let Matatu Saccos ensure there is enough water points at their various stations to ensure everyone washes his or her hands,” he stated.

The residents on other hand have been asked to stop waiting until they are arrested to wear masks.

This follows a move by the police in Kisumu to arrest people found without masks in public.
