KNH health workers down tools over delayed salary review

Health workers at the Kenyatta National Hospital on Monday began their strike over delayed salary review as they carried placards while protesting in front of the hospital.

Secretary-general Seth Panyako said they resorted to strike because the SRC did not honour the agreement as it chose to behave like it is the only institutional body in the country.

“The money that we are talking about has been approved..no going back. We want SRC to give a letter advising KNH on payment, thereafter, the strike will be called off,” Panyako said.

He added that the Treasury had already released the money and Parliament had approved the Sh601 million but SRC does not want Kenyatta to implement the salary review process.  Panyako vowed that they will not have any engagements until they receive a letter of approval  from SRC.

SRC has however argued that the re-categorization did not involve a salary review.

The health workers have downed their tools until vowing to only resume work after SRC reviews their salaries in accordance with the new salary structure submitted to the commission in 2012.

KNH nurses are accusing the SRC of failing to honour the implementation of the new salary structure eight years after the new structure was arrived at.
