Kenya union of Teachers (KNUT) has refuted reports that it is behind the case challenging the reappointment of Nancy Macharia as TSC chief executive officer.
KNUT secretary general Wilson Sossion said, “The union has not filed a petition in any court opposing reappointment of Macharia to serve the commission for another term.”
Sossion said the strained relationship between the union and TSC is being mended and false reports can lead to a backlash.
The report claims that little-known rights group has rushed to court arguing Macharia’s reappointment is against the law.
Midrift Human Rights Network wants Nakuru High Court Judge Monica Mbaru to declare Macharia’s reappointment null and void because the position must be filled through a competitive process.
The lgroup argues that TSC has not shown any evidence that it advertised and competitively filled the position.
Macharia’s term expired on June 30 but there was no clear communication about her retaining the job for a second and final term.
The petition comes days after the Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi warned against plans to keep Macharia at the helm of TSC.
Havi said in a letter that the process appointing Macharia successor was about to begin. He also wrote to the Attorney General Paul Kihara on the issue.
Macharia has over the time been accused by KNUT of ignoring the teachers, threatening the teachers with dismisals and working for the system.
