The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has confirmed that its iTax platform is experiencing delays as millions of taxpayers rush to file their 2025 income tax returns ahead of the June 30 deadline.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 30, the tax authority said the system is under heavy strain due to unusually high traffic as users attempt to submit their returns at the last minute. As a result, some taxpayers may face intermittent delays, slow response times, or difficulty accessing the platform.
KRA attributed the disruption to a sudden surge in simultaneous logins as the filing deadline approached, overwhelming parts of the online system.
“KRA has experienced a significant surge in traffic on the iTax system as millions of taxpayers race to file their annual tax returns ahead of the filing deadline. As a result, some users may experience intermittent delays,” the authority said.
The tax agency assured taxpayers that technical teams are actively working to stabilise the platform and maintain system performance despite the increased demand. Users were encouraged to continue attempting to file their returns via the iTax portal or use the 2225# USSD service as an alternative channel.
The disruptions sparked frustration online, with many Kenyans reporting failed logins, slow loading pages, and difficulties completing submissions as the midnight deadline neared. Some also raised concerns about the performance of KRA’s AI-powered assistant, Shuru, which was introduced to help simplify the filing process.
Despite the challenges, KRA maintained that there would be no extension of the June 30 deadline. The authority had earlier ruled out any extension, urging taxpayers to comply within the statutory timeline.
The agency further warned that failure to file returns on time could result in more than just penalties. Taxpayers risk being subjected to default assessments, where KRA estimates tax liability based on available financial information and issues an assessment accordingly.
As the deadline closes in, the authority continues to urge compliance while working to restore smooth access to the iTax system under heavy national demand.
