Hours after
her unanimous appointment by the Judicial Service Commission for the position
of Chief Justice, lady Justice Marta Koome has spoken.

Speaking after the Judicial Service Commission’s (JSC) Koome thanked all Kenyans for their support and prayers during this time in her quest for the top job.

During the
address Koome assured the nation that they got nothing to worry about, adding
that under her leadership, the
Judiciary will be in safe hands.

“You are in safe hands
and I thank God you prayed for me,” she affirmed.



Koome was battling it out with senior judges, and advocates, among others; Justice William Ouko, Justice Nduma Nderi,
Senior Counsels Fred Ngatia, and Philip Murgor.

Her scoring points during interviews include priorities to clearing backlog, increasing manpower, and working in collaboration with other stakeholders in improving budgetary allocations.

“Human capital is at 56
percent and we have a deficit of 44 percent. We also have budgetary constraints
as Judiciary received 0.86 percent of the national budget,” she is quoted as
saying.

She is expected to handle among others the issue of the 40 judge’s
appointment to different positions that has stalled for some time.

Koome has more in handling corruption within the Judiciary, improving ICT and digitization, ease of access to justice, and leadership provision.

Justice Koome was unanimously appointed by the commission yesterday as was announced by JSC vice-chairperson Prof Olive Mugenda.

“The Judicial Service Commission has finalized the process of evaluation of the various candidates interviewed for the position of Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya. The JSC has run an open, transparent, and competitive recruitment process that has witnessed the participation of the public and key stakeholders.

After lengthy deliberations and careful consideration of the performance of the various candidates, the JSC has unanimously recommended the appointment of Hon. Lady Justice Koome Martha Karagu, Judge of the Court of Appeal as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya and has submitted her name to His Excellency the President for the appointment,” said Prof. Olive Mugenda.
