Former Football Kenya Federation Deputy CEO Herbert Mwachiro is the latest to join the crowded race to unseat Nick Mwendwa as FKF president ahead of the yet to be confirmed elections.
Mwachiro is an experienced sports commentator who will face it out with the immediate former Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye, former Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga, former FKF president Sam Nyamweya and Gor Mahia CEO Lordick Aduda.
He served as the Events Director for Kenya’s failed bid to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament but he still feels he is better placed to transform Kenya’s ‘ailing’ football.
“My decision to run for the top foot seat in the country is informed by the desire to transform the football industry to a sustainable sector that will put Kenya where it deserves to be on the continental and global football map,” Mwachiro said.
He acknowledges that meaningful progress has been made under different administrations over the past decade but players continue to suffer and struggle to make ends meet and give football their all.
“The game is not well packaged thus the need to bring in the much needed professionalism through my marketing background and vast experience in the corporate world. We need to package our game in a way that will make it attractive to partners and ensure our players make a meaningful living from football. Kenya deserves to be a regular competitor at the Africa Cup of Nations because we have talent in abundance,” he added.
Mwachiro has also lauded the government for listening and cushioning athletes from the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
