President Kenyatta defied protocol during the 58th Madaraka Day celebrations by inviting ODM leader Raila Odinga to speak before him.

As customary, Deputy President William Ruto made his speech and invited the president to address the gathering.

When Kenyatta rose to speak, he apologized for breaking protocol and invited Odinga to deliver his speech even though the ODM leader does not hold any official position in the government.

“You will forgive me, but let me break protocol today to invite my brother, Raila Odinga, Jakom, to say hi to you and to deliver his Madaraka Day sentiments, welcome my brother,” Kenyatta said amid cheers from the crowd.

In his brief speech, Odinga rooted for the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), saying it is a bridge to a united country.

“We must remain united and support BBI which will bring unprecedented development and enhance unity in the Country. Handshake has given us an opportunity to bring Kenyans together and enhance development across the county, said Odinga.

He also thanked President Uhuru for undertaking development projects in the region.

Against protocol, Odinga went ahead to invite President Kenyatta to deliver his speech at the Madaraka Day fete held at Kisumu International Stadium.
