Mandera County Commissioner Kyatha Onesmus observed that many locals did not pick up their cards even after receiving a message instructing them on how to pick up the cards.

Mr Onesmus said that out of the 22,377 cards, 12,906 cards were picked.

He explained that the Huduma cards will be used as official IDs for all citizens in the country as well as foreign nationals living in the country in search of services at public offices.

But residents who live in rural areas complained of lack of network from mobile service providers especially in areas where they have experienced attacks.

They added they cannot keep tabs on huduma alerts messages through their phones.

They want the government to come up with an alternative way that they get their huduma cards.

Onesmus urged those who had not yet registered to take advantage of the second phase of the project, which he said the government would soon begin.

In addition, Onesmus has encouraged locals to respond to text messages to enable them to select the nearest location to pick their cards.

He added that the government through chiefs ensures that every citizen is enlightened on importance of this card.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and first lady Margaret Kenyatta were the first to receive the cards on October 20 last year during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Gusii Stadium in Kisii.

Huduma cards are expected to be used as IDs starting next year.
