Mara Heist vs The Mara Glory: How conflicting hashtags lit Twitter hours before Citizen TV exposé

On Sunday, September 1st, just hours before the Mara Heist exposé was aired on Citizen TV, two conflicting hashtags started trending on Twitter with one pact supporting Citizen TV while the other vindicating Maasai Mara University.

The two hashtags were the station’s original, #MaraHeist, while the contradictory one being, #The Mara Glory.

“Corrupt individuals managing public institutions like the Maasai Mara University should be jailed for life to serve as a lesson since the country is running deep in the grave of debts #MaraHeist,” expressed Dicken Satika.

“Trying to counter the expose. Let’s now wait for #MaraHeist and see exactly what has been happening,” argued Fred Kabutu.

Supporters of the other hashtag, however, argued that

“The only university which has signed MOUs with Witchdoctors across Kenya because it believes in traditional cure. #TheMaraGlory,” argued Mark Ngua.
