Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has been hailed for the manner he is managing the coronavirus crisis in the country.
His assumption to office in late February 2020 came at a time when there was a lot of anxiety concerning the dreaded COVID-19 that had already started wreaking havoc in Europe and other countries.
However, Kagwe’s cool demeanour typified by how he has been relaying the news seems to reassure Kenyans that all will be well if the masses keep to the movement restriction orders.
CS Kagwe laces his daily briefings with humour and concern; constantly appealing to Kenyans to adhere to the government directives to avoid a full-blown situation that could see our health system overran.
But even as Kagwe dazzles in both local and international stage, few Kenyans know about his wife Ann Wanjiku Mutahi, a financial expert who is also President Uhuru Kenyatta’s key advisor on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).
Wanjiku who holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Cape Town and an undergraduate degree from Duquesne University of The Holy Spirit is also the daughter to former Environment minister John Michuki.
The 58-year-old is an accomplished financial expert who has worked with several business firms in the last 20 years.
Before her appointment to be President Uhuru’s advisor, she was a non-executive director at TransCentury investment firm where she was the first and only woman to hold the top position.
Prior, she worked with a number of top financial institutions among them Citibank, Standard Chartered Bank and ABN AMRO Bank.
She has also served as the chairperson for the Women Enterprise Fund, Association of Micro Finance Institutions and Jitegemee Trust Limited as the CEO. Wanjiku also served as director at Old Mutual Life Insurance Company.
She also served as Vice-Chairperson SME unit at Citibank Kenya for 6 years, after her exit she came up with her company, Soko Letu Limited which creates and oversees SME retail outlets.
In 2010, she partnered with other stakeholders and launched Biashara Factors Limited, which she currently serves as executive director. This firm provides trade services to SMEs.
Wanjiku and Kagwe are blessed with four children.
