Meet the Rogue Chinese businessman at the centre of Kisumu Mall Scandals

Prior to his arrest last Friday not many could suspect that the quiet chinese who is erecting the many private owned homes, close to 7,000 units after completion of the ongoing projects.

Mr John Yang was arrested at his Finance House offices by detectives who posed as clients. Kenya Bulletin learnt that the rogue chinese man did not anticipate his arrest, instead of using his lawyers he used his personal aide to negotiate with the officers not to scuff him. He spent the weekend behind bars as police sought other suspects in the Kshs 4.1 billion scam.

Erdemann Property Ltd was contracted to build the mall in 2013, just a week after the general elections at Kshs. 2.5 billion. Prosecution found that the cost was later inflated to cover kickbacks to the officials.

Yang is embroiled in many court battles, including one with his neighbours in Athi River, London Distillers but this particular case marks the lowest point in his life.  He is accusing the liquor makers of disposing their waste in the wrong manner, and spreading a pungent smell all over.

His Seefar Apartment survived demolition despite being constructed at the banks of Nairobi Dam and obstructing the course of the river. This is a property of 288 units that he has since sold to another client but he is still in court battling the county government of Nairobi. Yang’s company is demanding Kshs 200 million for reconstruction of dam walls.

He is also putting up 2,700 units within the city centre at the banks of Nairobi River in Ngara, another project that will stand at 34 floors. He projects that his firm can deliver upto 2,000 units annualy. It however unclear the implications his firm will further get deep into considering that it is expected to foster the delivery of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s dream of affordable housing.
