Kenyan striker Michael Olunga has set his ambitions on performing better than last season by increasing goal tally for his club Kashiwa Reysol when the J1 league resumes.
The Japanese top league was halted by the coronavirus outbreak in February, one match into the 2020 season with Olunga scoring twice as his club started with a 4-2 win over Consadole Sapporo.
Olunga scored 27 goals last season to help his team climb ranks from J2 league to top flier J1 said there are a lot of expectations he must deliver.
The 26-year-old forward who previously played in China, singled out his stint with Spanish side Girona as the best of his career so far.
“You could see the level and quality of the game was more mature and the players’ ability in terms of technique; the tempo of the game was quite different and playing against teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona was a good thing for me,” Olunga added.
Japan is currently under a nationwide state of emergency until the end of May in efforts to avoid the spread of covid-19, Olunga and his teammates have been working out from home.
“No activities involving five or more players. We have to try and figure out the best thing to do while working from home but we are yet to resume pitch training” he said.
The Gor Mahia striker who arrived in Japan in 2018 is still facing challenges of language barrier since he is the only English-speaking player at Reysol but he is has established himself as the fan’s favourite at the club which is now second on the J1 league standings. michael-olunga-scores-seven-goals
The lanky forward further called on his colleagues in the national team and in Kenyan Premier League to remain united during this period.
