Mombasa county health officials have raised concerns over the rapid increase of COVID-19 positive cases in the region.
The county has already recorded 109 positive cases of the virus and six deaths related to the disease this month.
“Some of the reasons Mombasa is experiencing a surge in cases of COVID-19 is because of inter-county travel, which we are not in control of, and reluctance to observe ministry of health regulations,” said Mombasa County Director of Communication Richard Chacha.
As of May 30th, Mombasa County had recorded a cumulative number of 11,618 positive cases of COVID-19, however, the number shot to 11,727 as of June 7th.
Out of the cumulative positive number, 7,965 are male and 3,762 females as the positivity rate in the month of June stands at 7.5 percent.
The total number of patients who have been discharged is 9,910. Out of these, 1,517 were discharged from health facilities and 8,393 from home-based care.
Meanwhile, 331 people in the county have so far received the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine since the exercise was rolled out on Wednesday, June 2nd.
Out of the 331 people, 248 are health care workers, 5 security officers, 12 teachers and 30 people who are above 58 years old.
Mombasa County is expected to give the second COVID-19 vaccine dose to 26,206 who received the first one.
