Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has said that he will be addressing the National Assembly in Kikuyu language after Speaker Justin Muturi’s coronation as Mt Kenya spokesperson.

Speaker Muturi was crowned as the Mt Kenya spokesperson on Saturday, May 22, at the Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga Shrine and preeminent leader after President Uhuru Kenyatta.

During an interview with K24 on Tuesday, May 25, 2021, the vocal tangatanga MP dismissed Muturi’s coronation saying it was ridiculous for the head of the third arm of government to be installed as a tribal leader.
The Gatundu South MP claimed that the Speaker had degraded to a community leader as opposed to a national leader and that he would address him in the House in his native Kikuyu language, especially on this particular matter of his coronation.

Kuria said he will not use English again in
parliament proceedings, insisting it will not be a violation of the standing
orders as the Speaker himself had contravened the orders.

“I was seeking for a chance to speak (in
parliament) but I did not get. I hope they bring it again because when we
resume I will address parliament on this issue (of coronation) and I will do it
in Kikuyu.

He is now my community leader and I will address parliament in the Kikuyu language. I will never address parliament in English again,” Kuria said.

Reports have revealed that Muturi’s coronation triggered
divided opinions, especially among the political class.

A section of Murang’a MCAs from the County Assembly
Committee for Culture had opposed Muturi’s crowning and vowed to block him from
ascending as the Mt Kenya kingpin.

Days before the D-day, the MCAs led by Stephen Chege
cautioned Muturi and some Agikuyu elders against conducting the planned
coronation at Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga shrine.
