Elgeyo-Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen has claimed embattled Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru has already been “sanitised and cleared” by the Upper House and that justice has been denied to the county residents.
The outspoken lawmaker who vehemently opposed formation of a committee to determine the governor’s fate claimed a predetermined decision had been made to save the county boss.
Murkomen argued the 11-member committee that was voted by the Senate on Tuesday, June 16, had been “fixed” and would rule in favour of Waiguru to continue staying in office despite the corruption allegations levelled against her.
“Senate has sanitised and cleared the governor of Kirinyaga. It’s done. Don’t wait for the committee’s decision.
“To the people of Kirinyaga, I am sorry we did our best but It is finished.Your fight for accountability has been frustrated by Senate, don’t give up use other avenues,” said Murkomen.
“We need to have a process that is not fixed from the beginning, that does not have pre-determined results…I am not saying committees are bad. I am against committees that are fixed,” added Murkomen.
The Senate business committee led by Majority Whip and Murang’a Senator Irungu Kang’ata tabled a motion on the establishment of a select committee on Tuesday, June 16, to investigate removal of Waiguru, a first-term governor from office.
The 11 senators proposed were: Abshiro Halakhe (nominated), Michael Mbito (Trans nzoia), Paul Githiomi (Nyandarua), Beth Mugo (nominated), Anwar Loitiptip (Lamu), Philip Mpayeeyi (Kajiado), Cleopas Malala (Kakamega), Beatrice Kwamboka (nominated), Stewart Madzayo (Kilifi),Judith Pareno (nominated) and Moses Kajwang’ (Homa Bay).
Waiguru, the former Devolution CS, who resigned in 2015 over corruption allegations in the NYS, was kicked out of office in the afternoon of Tue, June 9, after 23 out of 33 MCAs voted to oust her over abuse of office allegations and gross misconduct.
