Nairobi Water Company Appoints New MD

Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has been under fire after cartels switched off main City Supplies so that they forever supply water to residents.

Nahason Muguna has been appointed amid a looming water crisis in the City that Nairobi Water has cited the floods that destroyed pipes that feed the Capital City.

“The Board of Directors Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company Ltd (NCWSC) wishes to announce the appointment of Eng. Nahason Muguna as the Company’s Managing Director with effect from 27th May 2020,” NCWSC tweeted.

Will that hasten the return of water supplies now missing these last three weeks? How was his NEMA case finalized?

Some of these appointments are truly a waste of time and money. All Nairobians want is a competent fellow who will make sure the City has WATER. How will people wash hands when taps are empty?

Last month, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NWSCO) acting managing director (MD) Mr Nahason Muguna was arrested by National Environment Management (NEMA) officials for failing to stop disposal of raw sewerage into Nairobi River.

In 2019, NEMA closed four companies in Industrial Area for discharging dangerous waste into the river.

They included; Modern Lithographic (K) Ltd, Apex Limited that manufactures paints, Thorlite Kenya Ltd and Kamongo Paper Recycling Company.

In August, Water Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui said that at least 4,404 pollutants were found in the river.

A more shocking event happened in November 2019, when Sonko Rescue team discovered 17 bodies; 13 infants and four adults dumped in the now Africa’s dirties river.

One then wonders, will the Nairobi River ever be clean? Then acting Nema director general Mamo Mamo, said it is possible but it will take time.

“The big challenge is the informal settlement within the riparian areas. We want to ensure that we can get proper sanitation for informal settlement through innovative means. This is for instance giving them proper sanitation facilities instead of flying toilets,” he said.

In March this year, NEMA shut down DP Ruto owned Hotel Boulevard, located along Harry Thuku road in Nairobi for releasing untreated waste into Nairobi River.

“NEMA has stopped operations of Boulevard Hotel in Nairobi with immediate effect for discharging untreated effluent into Nairobi River. The hotel has also been ordered to remove pipes discharging effluent into the River,” Nema said in a tweet.

Nahashon Muguna was appointed in 2017 after the board of directors of Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) declined to renew the contract of former Managing Director Philip Gichuki.
