Narok County Senator Ledama Counters DPP Haji’s Proposal

Narok Senator Ledama OleKina

Yesterday, the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji proposed that traffic police officers be fitted with bodycameras in order to effectively undertake their jobs.

In a statement, DPP Haji said that it is difficult to conduct investigations having that in most cases, there is no factual evidence provided and the only thing that is being relied on is the word of the police and the those of accused.

“It will be in my view, difficult, to gather enough evidence to demonstrate that an excess passenger refused to comply with the order of a police officer or declined a request by the owner, conductor and/or driver not to enter the PSV. In most cases, it will be the word of the police officer against that of the passenger,” DPP Haji said.

Ina quick rejoinder Narok Senator Ledama OleKina suggested an equal provision in the law where motorists are required to fit their vehicles with cameras and that no policeman should enter the vehicle in case of arrests.

‘The DPP wants traffic police fitted with body-cams in addition to that I will propose an amendment to the traffic act to require all Vihicles to be fitted with cameras, drivers to remain in their cars at all times during checkpoints! Police prohibited from entering private cars’, the Senator said.
