A top Kenyan scientist who participated in a ground-breaking medical research on a malaria vaccine has been honoured by Maseno University.

The institution paid for a half-a-page advert in one of the country’s top newspapers on Wednesday, 10 November 2021, to pay homage to one of their own: Dr. Walter Otieno.

In 2010, he was among medical experts who took part in a four-month pre-vaccine trial on malaria and six years later in 2016, he was invited to work on the vaccine pilot study in Kisumu.

Dr Otieno participated and played a key role as the principal investigator in Kombewa and its environs.

The vaccine was recently approved by World Health Organization.

An excellent paediatrician, Dr Otieno regards his love for children is his greatest motivation whenever it comes to work.

He has been often quoted saying he derives joy from seeing healthy children and happy nursing mothers.
