Ngugi has gained recognition for his genre-defying novel.
The Nommo awards are literary awards given to African authors of the African Speculative Fiction genre. This genre encompasses science fiction, fantasy, stories of magic and traditional belief, alternative histories, horror and strange stuff that might really not fit in any other genre. Interestingly, the awards are named after the ‘Nommo’ which is an African deity.
Prolific Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong’o has been nominated for his latest body of work; The Perfect Nine. The book written in local dialect Gikuyu, is Ngugi’s first attempt at an epic, and tells the story of the founding of the Gikuyu people of Kenya, from a strongly feminist perspective. In April, Ngugi received a nomination for the International Booker Prize for The Perfect Nine, as both its author and translator.
Other authors who have made the Nommo awards long list include; Nigeria’s Akwaeke Emezi, South Africa’s Lauren Beukes, and Zimbabwe’s Shanice Ndlovu. The Nommo awards are divided into four long lists; the novel long, novella, short story and graphic novel.
