ODM withdraws from Kahawa Wendani and Lake View mini polls

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) will not field candidates in Kahawa Wendani and Lake View wards mini polls after Jubilee announced it would not field a candidate in Msambweni.

The party’s Secretary general Edwin Sifuna said National Executive Council Committee resolved to stay off Jubilee strongholds during a two-day retreat in Machakos county.

ODM’s National Elections Board claims it received applications from interested candidates in all the five by-elections scheduled for December 15 but only the candidate in Wundanyi/Mbale ward will be handed a direct ticket.

But nominations will be held in Msambweni and Kisumu North ward where the party has more than one applicant.

“As a party, we wish to thank Jubilee Party leader President Uhuru Kenyatta for the decision not to field a candidate in Msambweni in the spirit of the handshake. In the same spirit, the party’s NEC has resolved that ODM will not be fielding candidates in Lake View Ward in Nakuru County and Kahawa Wendani Ward in Kiambu both of which were held by Jubilee,” Sifuna said.

Kahawa Wendani MCA Cyrus Omondi was found dead in his hotel room in India after he suffered a heart attack while his Lake View counterpart was killed in a road accident at Gilgil along Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The withdrawal move is made on a reciprocal basis after Jubilee party announced that it will not field a candidate in Msambweni Constituency. The seat was left vacant after ODM’s Suleiman Dori passed on in March.
