Okiya Omtatah joins Azimio La Umoja

Public Defender Okiya Omtatah shakes the hand of President Uhuru Kenyatta during the Azimio La Umoja Delegates Convention

Human rights activist Okiya Omtatah Okoiti has officially declared his support for ODM Party leader Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

Speaking hours after attending the Azimio la Umoja National Delegates Convention at the Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC), Omtatah announced that his party, the National Reconstruction Alliance (NRA), will be part of the mega-alliance.

Mr. Omtatah is the appointed leader of the political outfit formed in February 2021 by city lawyers Riziki Dunstan, Amemba Magufuli and Fredrick Ojiambo.

“As Party Leader National Reconstruction Alliance (NRA) Party I joined H.E President Uhuru and Former Prime Minister Right Honourable Raila Odinga during the Azimio la Umoja Delegates convention at KICC yesterday,” he wrote on a Twitter post published on Sunday 13th March 2022.

During Saturday’s event, NRA joined at least thirty other political parties that signed a pre-election deal under Azimio la Umoja, with the biggest catch being Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper, who had previously ruled out endorsing Odinga.

NRA whose slogan is “Mwamko Mpya” has its headquarters along the Ngong-Matasia road and has offices in 41 counties and over 500, 000 registered members across the country.

Other tangible persons who graced the Azimio La Umoja National Delegates Convention (NDC) included President Uhuru Kenyatta who will also serve as the coalition’s patron besides being the Jubilee Party leader.

Gideon Moi of KANU, Cyrus Jirongo of United Democratic Party, Charity Ngilu of Narc, and Kiraitu Murungi of Devolution Empowerment Party were also present and their parties signed the deal.

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua of Maendeleo Chap Chap Party, Laikipia Governor Nderitu Mureithi of Democratic Party, and Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa of Democratic Action Party, and former Transport Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera of the Farmers Party were also part of the deal.

Governors Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni), Wycliff Oparanya (Kakamega), and Anyang Nyong’o (Kisumu) were also present.

However, Martha Karua of Narc-Kenya, was conspicuously missing despite having penned a deal with the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) on Friday, March 11.
