Blogger Cyprian Nyakundi has sent a series of tweets on the menace that is loan sharks in the Kenyan market.

“Something must be done about unregulated shylocks that are the cause of many suicides and misery in this country. They have spammed the whole country with adverts promising loans, yet as you get out with the condemned loan, a buyer of your car walks in!”, he began

Then continued, With an ever-tightening lending landscape by financing institutions & bureaucratic processes in accessing credit, many borrowers seek shylocks who chargee them an arm and a leg, leaving ordinary citizens poorer and more miserable than before. This industry must be regulated!

The promise of quick loans from shylocks is enticing at face value & has baited many unsuspecting borrowers who only need to fill a few papers and without background checks or sometimes no collateral yet many are scammers ready to tow and auction your car! Something must be done.

We cannot just assume that shylocks don’t exist. We just can’t assume that we don’t have friends or relatives with horror stories caused by the shylocks who took advantage of their desperation. Sadly, I head they eat with Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) officials.
Interesting that CBK said they’d regulate loan apps for portraying predatory practices and left out shylocks that have even “Branded” themselves as the saviours yet they are predators.
In Kenya, shylocks have flourished as ordinary citizens are reduced to beggars for failing to repay their loans with others sinking to depression with a rise in reported cases of suicide.
The shylocks will display conspicuous and enticing offers on strategic places. Even  CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge knows this is wrong and the  CBK must surely and quickly do something. We need WARNINGS of the same size on the misery the cause eg Depression, suicides and even losing property!
So desperate are the shylocks that they make small cards and stop everyone with cars (Their target group ) and give them the cards advertising their business. Opus Dei Patrick Njoroge may call this capitalism but I call is “Predatory capitalism”
I am not a sadist but as per the many complaints I have received, the Shylocks have caused more misery, CBK has to step in and regulate this money laundering through shylocks.
The CBK and their head Opus Dei Patrick Njoroge has completely lost control of the money-laundering shylock industry, where people can be lent hundreds of millions per day. Where is this money coming from???? Steal from Jane, pay Ruth? Ahem!!!
We all know many of these shylocks are washing dirty money, stolen from taxpayers etc. But we do nothing, say nothing.
If the CBK is gonna allow the shylock industry, then they must educate Kenyans on the dangers, that we all know. The role of CBK is to also protect Kenyans.
