Opiyo Wandayi vs Otiende Amollo; ODM internal wars threaten to spill over to House floor tomorrow – Kenyan_Report

A major showdown is expected when the National Assembly reconvenes tomorrow to debate the report presented before it by a joint team of both the Senate and the National Assembly Legal Affairs Committees.

Yesterday, Ugunja Member of Parliament Opiyo Wandayi led a section of other ODM MPs to reiterate their support for the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2020 (popularly known as the BBI) as was passed by the county assemblies. He also went ahead to lambast some unnamed legislators who he accused of trying to sneak in to the BBI amendments that aren’t contained in the original draft, and which will water down the document that is supported by Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.

This comes hot on the heels of an earlier split that was witnessed on Friday, when some members of the joint legal affairs committees voted finding fault in some of the sections contained within the report.

A group that wrote a minority report, led by Senator Sakaja, held a contrary view that as long the schedule is endorsed by the county assemblies, Parliament should let the people decide that matter. The team included Muturi Kigano and Samburu West MP Naisula Leisuda. This is the view supported by the Opiyo Wandayi camp. They hold that the Bill should sail by as is, with absolutely no corrections or recommendations added.

The majority group brought together Senators Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira), James Orengo (Siaya), Mutula Kilonzo Jnr (Makueni), Irungu Kangata (Murang’a), Nominated Senator Naomi Wako and MPs Otiende Amollo (Rarieda) Zulekha Hassan (Kwale woman Representative) opposed to the usurping of the IEBC role.

Upon receiving the report yesterday from the joint team, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi said that the report will be tabled for adoption on the floor of the house tomorrow. Senate too will hold its sittings tomorrow.
