Days after Health CS Mutahi Kagwe directed 14 seater matatus to observe social distancing and carry only 8 passengers, a spot check by KenyanBulletin shows that Kacose Sacco which has matatus plying the Banana Nairobi route are carrying 19 passengers in the 14 seaters.
The lack of checkpoints on the roads and no fare hikes on these matatus is an inviting offer to poor Kenyans who still commute to work and are quick to squeeze into these vehicles even though they are aware of the risks.
The excess passengers are then offboarded in Ruaka to avoid suspicion. The vehicle included down below is one of many practicing this heinous crime.
So far Kenya has confirmed 15 cases of the coronavirus and if directives issued by the government are not adhered to, the number is only set to rise. These matatus are endangering thousands and thousands of lives and action should be taken immediately.
