Police officers on Monday, May 31,2021 disrupted Deputy President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance party (UDA) meeting in Meru County, accusing its organisers of violating COVID-19 protocols.
The UDA party meeting had been convened by the party’s Secretary General, Veronica Maina at Gatimene gardens in Meru County for the aspirants seeking nomination.
However, police officers led by security chiefs from Meru Division stormed the meeting alleging that the organisers had not adhered to the covid-19 containment measures as required by the government.
This was revealed by Dennis Itumbi who stated that: “Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi orders a Meru DO to disperse a UDA Kenya aspirants meeting in a hotel. Kifua, Intimidation na madharau. Meru aspirants firmly on their seats daring police to arrest them all. Aspirant Forums in Western and Nyanza allowed. But in Mt. Kenya Stopped!”
The politicians claimed that they did not warrant any response from the police since they were in a hotel. However, their argument turned messy as police lobbed tear gas and fired in the air, forcing them to scamper for safety.
Speaking after the incidence, Deputy President William Ruto condemned the police accusing them of harassment and using live bullets to disperse his allies.
They claimed the incident was part of the continuing trend of harassing UDA politicians and their supporters by the government as was also witnessed in Bonchari and Rurii ward by-elections.
This comes after the police had evicted Ruto’s allies from a hotel in Nairobi where they were planning to address the press about the state of the nation.
Conveners of the meeting claimed that the officers had asked them to vacate The Social House in Lavington for allegedly flouting the revised COVID-19 rules.
