Police Officers Attacked while Repossessing a Motorbike from a Loan Defaulter

Two police officers sustained injuries during chaos that erupted in Kitale town, Trans Nzoia County, after a group of Boda boda riders ganged up against a team from a microfinance institution that sought to repossess a motorbike from a loan defaulter.

Police say the microfinance officers on Tuesday attempted to forcefully recover the motorbike from the defaulter who was amongst a group of riders at a Boda boda shed.

A fight broke out between the riders and the officers, who reportedly attempted to grab the bike’s ignition keys from the defaulting rider.

“They accused the management of the microfinance of high–handedness and being out of touch with the prevailing business realities,” police said in a report on Tuesday.

The commotion attracted the attention of police officers based at the nearby Veterinary patrol base, who immediately responded and tried to calm the situation.

The officers were however met with resistance from the riders, who pelted them with stones, forcing the officers to fire two rounds in the air to disperse them.

Police have not confirmed any arrests from the incident.
